What is the IELTS Exam?

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a globally recognized test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who aim to study, work, or migrate to countries where English is the primary language of communication. It is accepted by thousands of organizations, including universities, employers, professional bodies, and immigration authorities in countries like the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

IELTS Exam Components

The IELTS exam tests four core language skills:

Skills Tested Description
Listening 30 minutes - Involves listening to four recordings of native English speakers and answering a series of questions.
Reading 60 minutes - You will read texts and answer questions. There are two types: Academic (for higher education) and General Training (for migration and secondary education).
Writing 60 minutes - You will write two tasks: one descriptive task (e.g., interpreting a graph or chart) and an essay.
Speaking 11-14 minutes - Face-to-face interview with an examiner, including a brief Q&A session and a longer turn to discuss a given topic.

Types of IELTS Exams

The IELTS offers three versions depending on your purpose:

IELTS General Training For individuals migrating to English-speaking countries, seeking work or secondary education. Focuses on everyday English.

The total time for the IELTS exam is around 2 hours and 45 minutes, divided as follows:

  • Listening: 30 minutes
